Suriya (born 23 July 1975 as Saravanan Sivakumar) is an Indian film actor, producer, philanthropist and television presenter, whose work is predominantly in the Tamil film industry. He has acted in 28 films in various genres as a lead actor. After making his debut in the acclaimed productionNerukku Ner (1997), he went on to feature in many successful films including Nandha (2001), Kaakha Kaakha (2003), Pithamagan (2003),Perazhagan (2004), Ghajini (2005), Sillunu Oru Kaadhal (2006), Vel (2007), Vaaranam Aayiram (2008), Ayan (2009), Aadhavan (2009), Singam (2010),7aum Arivu (2011) and Maattrraan (2012). He has also made a Bollywood foray with the film Rakht Charitra (2010). As of 2010,^[2] he has won threeTamil Nadu State Film Awards and three Filmfare Awards South, establishing himself as one of the leading contemporary actors in Tamil cinema.

He became a film producer after opening Studio Green, which was responsible for producing and distributing a few of his own and his brother Karthi's films. He is the eldest son of veteran Tamil film actor Sivakumar and married actress Jyothika in 2006, after being engaged for several years. In 2008, he began Agaram Foundation, which funds programmes for preventing early childhood drop-outs.^[3] As of 2012, Suriya is the host of the STAR Vijaygame show Neengalum Vellalam Oru Kodi.

Early life and family

Suriya was born to Sivakumar and his wife Lakshmi in Chennai in 1975. He is the eldest of three children. Suriya attended Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan School^[4] and St. Bede's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai,^[5] and obtained his under graduate degree B.Com from Loyola College, Chennai.^[6] Suriya has a younger brother, Karthi, who is also a popular Tamil film actor, and a younger sister named Brindha Sivakumar.

Suriya is married to Jyothika, who was also popular film actress, with whom he was paired in films such as Poovellam Kettuppar, Uyirile Kalanthathu,Kaakha Kaakha, Perazhagan, Maayavi, June R and Sillunu Oru Kaadhal. After several years of being engaged, the couple married on 11 September 2006,^[7] The couple has two children, daughter Diya (b. 2007)^[8] and son Dev (b. 2010).^[9]
